File Manager for Android Automotive

Android Automotive OS is the full, embedded Android in your car's infotainment system — not phone mirroring, not Android Auto, but a complete OS running on the vehicle. AnExplorer gives you a car-optimised file manager for this platform: large touch targets, driver safety mode, and full support for dashcam footage, USB drives, and app sideloading.

AnExplorer is available directly on the integrated Play Store in Android Automotive vehicles, or via APK sideloading.

Brands Supporting Android Automotive (Comprehensive List)

Production & Near-term: Porsche, BMW, Audi, Mercedes (announced), Lamborghini, Lucid, Rivian, Fisker, Ineos Grenadier
Announced: Alpine, Cupra, Dacia, SEAT/Cupra, Skšoda, Togg (Turkish), and 20+ others

All these brands will offer AnExplorer from their vehicle's Google Play Store with the same full feature set as the dedicated guides above.

Manage Dashcam Footage

Many Android Automotive cars have USB-A ports in the centre console connected to the car's dashcam or BlackBox system. AnExplorer reads these drives directly:

  1. Open AnExplorer from the car's app launcher
  2. Tap USB Storage in the storage panel
  3. Browse event folders (usually named by date/time)
  4. Copy important clips to cloud storage (Dropbox / OneDrive) or play them on screen

This is particularly useful in Polestar 2 and Volvo cars where the dashcam writes to a USB drive plugged into the centre console.

Transfer Files from Phone to Car

Move music, podcasts, or navigation maps from your phone to your car without cables:

  1. Open AnExplorer on your Android phone and tap WiFi Share
  2. Select files to share
  3. On the car's infotainment, open AnExplorer → NetworkWiFi Receive
  4. Accept — transfer completes over vehicle WiFi hotspot or home WiFi

Sideload Apps on Android Automotive

Some apps are not available in the Play Store's automotive variant. AnExplorer's APK installer lets you sideload:

  1. Transfer the APK to your car via USB drive or WiFi
  2. Open AnExplorer and navigate to the APK file
  3. Tap to install — the APK Installer handles the rest

Sideloaded apps appear in your car's app launcher alongside Play Store apps.

Note: Android Automotive may have security policies that restrict APK installation. Check your vehicle's developer settings first.

Driver Safety Interface

AnExplorer on Android Automotive applies car-safe UI rules:

  • Large buttons: minimum 48 dp touch targets for gloved hands
  • High contrast: readable in direct sunlight
  • No keyboard input required: all navigation via touch or physical buttons
  • Quick access: common actions (open USB, WiFi receive) in toolbar for minimal distraction

AnExplorer also respects Android Automotive's Driving Mode — complex operations like setup and bulk transfers are blocked when the vehicle is in motion.
