File Manager for Audi — Android Automotive
Audi has integrated Google Built-in Android Automotive OS into its next-generation electric vehicle lineup, starting with the Q6 e-tron and A6 e-tron on the shared VW Group e3 Premium Platform. This delivers a full embedded Android experience — not phone mirroring — directly in the vehicle's infotainment system.
AnExplorer installs from the in-car Google Play Store on all Audi vehicles with Google Built-in, providing a purpose-built file manager for USB drives, cloud storage, wireless phone-to-car transfers, and APK sideloading.
Platform note: Audi's AAOS is powered by the e3 platform (also used by Porsche Macan EV and selected VW Group EVs). This is distinct from the older MIB2+ and MIB3 hardware, which support Android Auto phone mirroring only — not native AAOS apps. Only e3-platform vehicles carry the "Google Built-in" designation and full Play Store access.

Audi Q6 e-tron — Android Automotive in Detail
The Audi Q6 e-tron (2024+) is the first Audi model to ship with full Android Automotive and Google Built-in. It features Audi's new MMI panoramic display — a curved widescreen spanning the dashboard — providing ample space for file browsing.
With AnExplorer on the Q6 e-tron you can:
- Browse the USB-C media drive in the centre console
- Access dashcam recordings from Audi's integrated front camera
- Transfer music, podcasts, and audiobooks from your phone via WiFi
- Access NAS or home server files over the vehicle's built-in hotspot
- Upload dashcam clips to Dropbox or OneDrive directly from the car
- Install APKs for apps not available in the automotive Play Store
Dashcam Footage Management
The Audi Q6 e-tron includes an integrated Audi Front Camera that records in continuous-loop mode. Footage is stored on internal storage or an SD card depending on configuration:
- Open AnExplorer from the Audi app launcher
- Tap Local Storage or SD Card — dashcam clips appear in date-stamped folders
- Select recordings to copy to USB or upload to cloud
- Use WiFi Transfer to send directly to your phone
Audi A6 e-tron — Executive Sedan with AAOS
The Audi A6 e-tron (2024+) is Audi's executive electric sedan with the same e3 platform and Google Built-in support. The A6 e-tron's Virtual Cockpit and centre display combination gives AnExplorer a premium interface.
Use cases on the A6 e-tron:
- Manage work documents stored on USB drives during travel
- Access NAS or SMB shares from office networks remotely
- Sync cloud storage (OneDrive, Google Drive) for document access during business trips
- Download and sideload enterprise apps for fleet management
Audi MMI Panoramic Display — File Browsing Tips
Audi's MMI panoramic display (used on Q6 e-tron and A6 e-tron) is a wide-format curved screen with a separate Audi virtual cockpit cluster. AnExplorer adapts to this layout:
- Landscape mode fits Audi's wide-aspect display natively — no rotation needed
- List view is best for deep folder trees (dashcam footage, music libraries)
- Grid view works well for photo and video thumbnails
- Use Quick Access shortcuts to pin frequently used folders (e.g. USB dashcam drive)
- Audi's split-screen mode allows AnExplorer + a media player side-by-side
Cloud Access via Audi Connect LTE
All e3-platform Audi vehicles include Audi connect with built-in LTE/5G. AnExplorer uses this connection for:
- Uploading dashcam recordings to Dropbox or OneDrive automatically
- Accessing Nextcloud / WebDAV / SMB files via the vehicle hotspot
- Downloading podcast episodes or music directly in the car
- Streaming documents from Google Drive linked to the vehicle account
Wireless Transfer from Phone
Transfer playlists, podcasts, or navigation POI files from your Android phone without a cable:
- On your phone: AnExplorer → WiFi Share → select files
- On the Audi MMI: AnExplorer → Network → WiFi Receive
- Accept — files transfer over Audi's WiFi hotspot or home network
This is the fastest way to refresh music libraries or load new audiobooks before a journey.
Audi vs Older MMI Systems — Compatibility Summary
| Audi System | Generation | Connectivity | AnExplorer Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| MMI 3G+ | Pre-2020 | Proprietary | ❌ |
| MIB2 / MIB2+ | 2020–2023 | Android Auto (mirroring) | ❌ |
| MIB3 | 2022–2024 | Android Auto + CarPlay | ❌ |
| e3 / AAOS (Google Built-in) | 2024+ | Android Automotive OS | ✅ Full |
Only the newest e3 platform Audis with the "Google Built-in" label support native AAOS apps. If your Audi has MIB3 hardware but shows only Android Auto (requires phone connected), it is not running AAOS natively.
