File Manager for Apple CarPlay
AnExplorer does not support Apple CarPlay. This is not a missing feature — CarPlay does not allow file manager apps by design.
Why CarPlay Does Not Support File Managers
Apple CarPlay is a driver-safety-focused projection system. It takes a subset of your iPhone's apps and displays them on the car's infotainment screen in a simplified interface. Apple restricts CarPlay to a short list of app categories:
- Navigation and maps
- Phone and messaging
- Music, podcasts, and audio streaming
- EV charging and parking (recent additions)
File management is not on the list. CarPlay's Human Interface Guidelines explicitly exclude general-purpose file browsers. Apple does not review or approve file manager apps for CarPlay, so none can appear on a CarPlay screen regardless of which iOS app you have installed on your iPhone.
What This Means in Practice
When your iPhone is connected to a CarPlay system:
- The CarPlay screen shows only the permitted app categories
- AnExplorer is not visible on the CarPlay screen — it is not projected
- Your iPhone continues to run normally off-screen
- You can interact with your iPhone directly (not through the CarPlay projection) for any file operations

Alternatives for In-Car File Access
For Android users: Android Auto media browsing
If your car supports Android Auto and your phone is Android, AnExplorer appears as a media source on the Android Auto dashboard. You can browse and play locally stored audio files. Full file management (not just media browsing) is also not permitted in Android Auto — but at least media access works.
For iPhone users: manage files on the phone, not the screen
While CarPlay is running, your iPhone screen is still active. You can:
- Keep AnExplorer Device Connect running on an Android phone on the same Wi-Fi hotspot
- Open Safari on your iPhone (not the CarPlay screen — the physical iPhone screen)
- Browse and transfer files before or after driving
→ Use AnExplorer from iPhone Safari
For in-car media: use the Files app on iPhone
The iPhone Files app is also not a CarPlay app, but it manages local files accessible to all CarPlay-compatible audio apps. If you copy music or podcasts to your iPhone using Device Connect, those files become available to the Music or Podcasts apps that do appear on CarPlay.
If Your Car Has Android Automotive (Google Built-In)
If your car runs Android Automotive OS (AAOS) — not Android Auto — the situation is different. Android Automotive is a full Android environment running natively in the car, and AnExplorer installs directly in the car without a phone projection. Cars with AAOS include Polestar, Volvo, Honda e:, and others.
