PDF Viewer for Android TV — Read Documents on the Big Screen

The PDF Problem on Android TV

Android TV doesn't include a PDF viewer. Unlike phones and tablets where you can open PDFs in Google Drive, Chrome, or dozens of apps — TV platforms have almost nothing. Google Drive for TV doesn't support document viewing. Chrome for TV doesn't exist. Adobe Reader isn't available for TV.

This is a real problem when you want to:

  • View a recipe on the kitchen TV
  • Display a presentation in a meeting room
  • Read a manual while assembling furniture (TV as reference screen)
  • Show documents to a group (family planning, travel itineraries)
  • View PDFs stored on your NAS media server

AnExplorer solves this with a built-in PDF viewer that works entirely via TV remote control. Navigate to any PDF (from USB, NAS, cloud, or local storage) and open it directly on the big screen.

How It Works

  1. Install AnExplorer on your Android TV (Play Store or Amazon Appstore)
  2. Navigate to your PDF — browse USB drives, connect to NAS via SMB, or access cloud storage
  3. Tap the PDF — AnExplorer's built-in viewer opens it full-screen
  4. Navigate — D-pad up/down scrolls, left/right changes pages

No additional apps needed. No sideloading. No complicated setup.

PDF Sources on Android TV

From USB drive

  1. Copy PDFs to a USB flash drive on your PC
  2. Plug into TV's USB port (or use USB-C OTG adapter)
  3. AnExplorer → USB drive → navigate to PDF → open

From NAS / home server

  1. AnExplorer → Network → SMB → connect to NAS
  2. Browse to your documents folder
  3. Open any PDF — streams from NAS, doesn't need to download

From cloud storage

  1. AnExplorer → Cloud → Google Drive / Dropbox / OneDrive
  2. Navigate to the PDF in your cloud
  3. Downloads and opens in the viewer

From phone (WiFi transfer)

  1. On phone: AnExplorer → WiFi Share → select PDF
  2. On TV: AnExplorer → WiFi Receive → accept
  3. PDF lands on TV → open with built-in viewer

Remote Control Navigation

The PDF viewer is fully D-pad optimized:

ButtonAction
D-pad Up/DownScroll page
D-pad Left/RightPrevious/next page
OK/SelectToggle zoom mode
BackExit PDF viewer
Volume Up/DownZoom in/out (some TVs)

No mouse or keyboard needed. Every interaction works with the standard TV remote.

Use Cases

Meeting room presentations

Display PDFs on a conference room TV — no laptop needed. Connect AnExplorer to your company NAS or cloud, navigate to the presentation PDF, and display on the big screen.

Kitchen recipe display

Keep your TV showing a recipe while you cook. Transfer the recipe PDF via phone WiFi Share or browse from cloud storage.

Product manuals

Assembling furniture or setting up equipment? Display the PDF manual on your TV screen while working with both hands free.

Family documents

Travel itineraries, school schedules, event programs — display on the living room TV for everyone to see.

Compatible TV Devices

AnExplorer's PDF viewer works on:

  • Nvidia Shield TV (Pro and standard)
  • Google TV Streamer / Chromecast with Google TV
  • Amazon Fire TV (Stick, Cube, Edition)
  • Sony Bravia (Android TV models)
  • TCL / Hisense (Google TV models)
  • Xiaomi Mi Box / Redmi TV Stick
  • Walmart Onn 4K Pro
  • Any Android TV / Google TV device

Viewing Large Documents

The TV's large screen makes reading multi-page documents comfortable:

  • Recipes display at full readable size without squinting
  • Technical manuals show diagrams clearly on 55"+ screens
  • Presentations fill the screen for group viewing
  • Financial documents (tax forms, statements) are readable without zooming

For regular PDF reading (books, long documents), a tablet or phone is more practical. The TV PDF viewer shines for group viewing and reference display — showing content while your hands are busy or while multiple people need to see the same document.
