AnExplorer on Philips TV — Compatibility Guide
Philips TVs have used multiple operating systems over the years. AnExplorer works on Philips TVs running Android TV or Google TV — but not on all Philips models. Here's what you need to know:
Compatible (Android TV / Google TV — 2019-2025 models):
- Philips OLED+ 900 series (2024-2025) with Google TV
- Philips OLED 800 series (2023-2025) with Google TV
- Philips The One (PUS8500/8800) with Google TV
- Philips PUS7000/8000 series with Android TV (2019-2023)
- Philips OLED 800/900 series with Android TV (2019-2022)
NOT compatible:
- Philips 2026+ models (all switched to Titan OS — no Android app support)
- Philips TVs with Saphi OS (budget models, no app store)
- Philips TVs with Roku TV (North American budget models)
How to check: Settings → About → look for "Android TV" or "Google TV" in the system info. If you see "Titan OS" or "Saphi", AnExplorer cannot be installed.
What AnExplorer Adds to Philips TV
Philips Android TV/Google TV models have a basic file manager built into the system, but it's extremely limited — it can browse USB drives and that's about it. AnExplorer adds:
| Feature | Built-in | AnExplorer |
|---|---|---|
| USB drive browsing | ✅ (basic) | ✅ (full, with sort/filter) |
| SMB (NAS access) | ❌ | ✅ Free |
| FTP client | ❌ | ✅ Free |
| Cloud storage (7 services) | ❌ | ✅ |
| Archive extraction (ZIP/RAR/7z) | ❌ | ✅ |
| APK installer | ❌ | ✅ |
| D-pad remote navigation | N/A | ✅ (fully optimized) |
| WiFi file receive | ❌ | ✅ |
Streaming Media from NAS
The primary use case for AnExplorer on Philips TV is accessing media stored on a home NAS:
- AnExplorer → Network → SMB → tap +
- Enter your NAS IP (e.g.,
192.168.1.100), username, password - Browse your video library on the NAS
- Tap any video file — it launches in VLC or the system media player
- Stream directly over your home network without copying to the TV
Philips TVs with Gigabit Ethernet handle 4K HDR streams from NAS without buffering. WiFi 5/6 models also work well for most content up to 4K 30fps. For the best streaming experience, use a wired Ethernet connection — Philips OLED and The One series all have Ethernet ports on the rear panel.
Supported video formats via external player (VLC recommended):
- MP4, MKV, AVI, MOV, WEBM, TS
- H.264, H.265/HEVC, VP9, AV1 (hardware decode on newer models)
- Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG
USB Drive Management
Philips TVs typically have 2-3 USB ports. AnExplorer provides better USB management than the built-in file browser:
- Sort files by name, date, size, or type
- Filter by media type — show only videos, photos, or music
- Navigate large libraries — the built-in browser struggles with folders containing hundreds of files
- Extract archives — open ZIP/RAR/7z files directly from USB
- Install APKs — sideload apps from USB drive
Cloud Storage on the Big Screen
Access your cloud files directly on the TV:
- Google Drive — browse photos, play videos stored in Drive
- Dropbox — access shared family photo albums
- OneDrive — play videos from Microsoft cloud
- MEGA — stream encrypted media
- Box, pCloud, Yandex Disk — all supported
This is especially useful for playing personal video content (home movies, travel footage) stored in cloud services without needing to cast from a phone.
Each cloud account appears in AnExplorer's sidebar for one-tap access. Browse your cloud photo library on the big screen, play videos directly, or download files to the TV's internal storage for offline access.
Remote Control Navigation
AnExplorer is fully optimized for D-pad remote control:
- Directional arrows — navigate file list and menus
- OK/Select — open file or folder, confirm actions
- Back — go up one folder level
- Home — return to AnExplorer's main screen
No mouse, keyboard, or touchscreen needed. Every menu, dialog, and file operation is reachable with the standard Philips remote.
Transferring Files from Phone to Philips TV
Send files from your Android phone to your Philips TV wirelessly:
- On your phone: open AnExplorer → WiFi Share → select files
- On your TV: open AnExplorer → Network → WiFi Receive
- Accept the transfer — files arrive in seconds
Transfer speeds reach 30-60 MB/s on a modern dual-band router. Useful for sending photos, videos, or APKs from phone to TV without USB drives or cloud uploads.
Sideloading Apps via AnExplorer
Philips Android TV/Google TV doesn't show all apps in the TV Play Store. To install apps not available in the TV store:
- Download the APK on your phone or PC
- Transfer to TV via USB drive or WiFi Share
- Open AnExplorer on TV → navigate to the APK → tap to install
- Grant "Install unknown apps" permission if prompted
AnExplorer handles split APK bundles (APKS, APKM, XAPK) that the system installer can't process — essential for sideloading apps from APKMirror that aren't available in the TV Play Store.
Philips Ambilight and File Browsing
Philips TVs with Ambilight (the LED backlighting system) continue to display ambient colors while using AnExplorer. When browsing photos or playing videos through AnExplorer, Ambilight reacts to the on-screen content — creating an immersive experience even during file management.
Important: 2026 Philips TVs Are NOT Compatible
In 2026, Philips (TP Vision) switched all TV models from Google TV to Titan OS — a Linux-based platform that does not support Android apps. If you purchased a Philips TV in 2026 or later, AnExplorer cannot be installed.
If you have a 2026+ Philips TV: Consider using AnExplorer on your phone with Device Connect to access files, then cast media to the TV using the built-in casting features of Titan OS.
FTP Client for Media Servers
Some home media setups use FTP servers (running on a Raspberry Pi, old PC, or NAS with FTP enabled):
- AnExplorer → Network → FTP → tap +
- Enter server IP, port 21, username, password
- Browse and play media files directly from the FTP server
This is useful when your media server doesn't support SMB, or when you want to access files on a remote server outside your local network (with port forwarding configured).
System File Picker on Android 11+ Philips TVs
Many emulators, media players, and sideloaded apps on Android TV throw a "You don't have an app that can do this" error when trying to open files. This happens because Android 11+ on TV lacks a native system file picker.
AnExplorer automatically registers as the default system file picker. Once installed, apps that previously threw errors will open AnExplorer to let you select ROMs, subtitles, configuration files, or any other file type.
