File Manager for TCL TV — What the Built-in App Can't Do
TCL TVs run Google TV (or older Android TV on some models), which includes a basic file browser. But that built-in browser is severely limited — it can show files on USB drives but can't connect to network storage, can't extract archives, can't install APK files, and has no real file management capabilities.
AnExplorer fills this gap. It's available directly from the Play Store on TCL TVs (no sideloading required to install it), runs with full D-pad remote control navigation, and brings the same powerful file management capabilities you have on your phone to your living room TV.
What AnExplorer Does on TCL TV
USB drive browsing — plug any USB drive (flash drive, external SSD, or portable hard drive) into your TCL TV's USB port. AnExplorer shows the full contents with folder navigation, file details, and the ability to copy, move, rename, or delete files. Play videos and music directly from the USB drive using the built-in media player.
NAS access via SMB — connect to your Synology, QNAP, or any NAS on your home network. Browse your movie library, photo archive, or music collection directly on the TV. Stream media files without copying them to the TV's limited internal storage.
APK sideloading — install apps not available in the TV Play Store. Transfer APK files via Wi-Fi Share from your phone, or load them from a USB drive. AnExplorer handles the installation including split APK bundles (APKS, APKM, XAPK).
Storage management — TCL TVs often have limited internal storage (8-16 GB). AnExplorer's Storage Analysis shows exactly what's consuming space. Clear app caches, delete old downloads, or move files to USB storage.
Media playback — play video (MP4, MKV, MOV) and audio (MP3, FLAC) files from any source using the built-in player. Navigate with your remote — play, pause, seek, and skip all work with standard TV remote buttons.
TCL TV Models and Compatibility
AnExplorer works on all TCL TVs running Android TV or Google TV:

TCL TV vs Other Android TVs
| Feature | TCL TV (Google TV) | Fire TV | Nvidia Shield | Sony Bravia |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Play Store access | ✅ Direct | ❌ (Amazon store) | ✅ Direct | ✅ Direct |
| AnExplorer install | Play Store | Sideload needed | Play Store | Play Store |
| USB ports | 1-2 (varies by model) | 1 (Stick) / 2 (Cube) | 2 | 2-3 |
| Internal storage | 8-32 GB | 8-16 GB | 16 GB | 16-32 GB |
| NAS via AnExplorer | ✅ SMB/FTP | ✅ SMB/FTP | ✅ SMB/FTP | ✅ SMB/FTP |
TCL TVs have the advantage of direct Play Store access for AnExplorer — no sideloading workaround needed (unlike Fire TV which requires the Downloader app method).
Troubleshooting TCL TV File Management
AnExplorer not in Play Store search results — some TCL TV models filter the Play Store to show only "TV-optimized" apps. Try searching from the Google Play Store website on your phone (play.google.com), find AnExplorer, and use "Install on device" → select your TCL TV. This pushes the install remotely.
USB drive not detected — try a different USB port (some TCL TVs have one port for power/service only). Format the drive as exFAT or FAT32 if it's NTFS (some older TCL firmware has limited NTFS support). Try a powered USB hub if the drive needs more power than the TV port provides.
NAS connection fails — verify your TV and NAS are on the same network (check IP addresses — both should start with the same prefix). Ensure SMB is enabled on your NAS (Synology: Control Panel → File Services → SMB → Enable). Try entering the IP address directly rather than relying on network discovery.
Video won't play from NAS — if the video plays from USB but not NAS, the issue is likely network speed. Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi (if your TCL TV supports it) or connect the TV via Ethernet for reliable 4K streaming from NAS. Also check that the video codec is supported (H.264 and H.265 work on all TCL TVs; AV1 only on newer models).
Storage full on TCL TV — TCL TVs often have only 8 GB internal storage. Use AnExplorer's Storage Analysis to identify what's consuming space. Clear app caches (Memory Cleaner), uninstall unused apps, and keep media on USB or NAS rather than internal storage.
Can't install APK (blocked) — go to Settings → Apps → Security & restrictions → Unknown sources → enable for AnExplorer. On newer Google TV versions, this is under Settings → Privacy → Security → Install unknown apps → AnExplorer → Allow. After enabling, retry the installation from AnExplorer — it should proceed without the block message.
