Archive Manager for Android TV — Extract ZIP, RAR, 7z on TV

Archives on Android TV — When You Need Them

Android TV doesn't ship with any archive handling capability. You can't open ZIP files, extract RAR archives, or handle 7z packages. This becomes a problem in several common TV scenarios:

Subtitle packs: Download a subtitle pack from OpenSubtitles — it arrives as a ZIP containing .srt files for different languages. You need to extract to get the subtitle file your player needs.

Sideloaded apps (XAPK/APKS): Modern app bundles from APKMirror come as XAPK or APKS — compressed packages containing multiple APKs. AnExplorer extracts and installs these.

Game ROMs (emulation): RetroArch and other emulators on TV use ROM files that are often distributed as ZIP/7z archives. Extract before the emulator can load them (or some emulators read ZIPs directly).

Multi-file downloads: Content downloaded from NAS or cloud sometimes arrives as compressed archives — photo collections, document bundles, media packs.

Theme and customization packs: Custom launchers and TV themes are distributed as ZIP archives containing multiple files.

How It Works on TV

Extracting an archive

  1. Navigate to the archive file in AnExplorer (USB, NAS, local, or cloud source)
  2. Select the archive with the D-pad → press OK
  3. AnExplorer shows archive contents (files and folders inside)
  4. Choose: Extract All (unpacks everything to current folder) or select specific files
  5. Extraction runs — progress shown on screen
  6. Extracted files available for use (play media, install APKs, load in apps)

Browsing without extracting

Sometimes you just want to see what's inside:

  1. Tap the archive → contents display in a list
  2. View file names, sizes, and structure
  3. Decide if you need to extract or skip this archive
  4. Back button exits without extracting

Creating archives on TV

Compress files for transfer:

  1. Select files in AnExplorer (long-press, then tap more)
  2. Menu → Compress → choose ZIP or 7z
  3. Name the archive → Create
  4. Compressed file ready to transfer via Device Connect or USB

Common TV Archive Workflows

Extracting subtitles

  1. Download subtitle ZIP from web (via Silk browser or transfer from phone)
  2. AnExplorer → navigate to the ZIP → extract
  3. .srt file appears → move to same folder as your video
  4. VLC or system player auto-detects the subtitle file

Installing XAPK sideloads

  1. Transfer XAPK (from APKMirror) to TV via WiFi Share
  2. AnExplorer → tap the XAPK
  3. AnExplorer extracts the APK + OBB components
  4. Installs the app + places OBB data correctly
  5. Game/app ready to launch with all assets

Emulator ROM management

  1. Transfer ROM archives (ZIP/7z) from PC or NAS
  2. AnExplorer → navigate to archive → extract
  3. ROM files appear in the extraction folder
  4. Point emulator (RetroArch) to the folder containing extracted ROMs

Remote Control Operation

All archive operations work with the standard TV remote:

  • D-pad to navigate file lists inside archives
  • OK to select/extract
  • Back to cancel or go up
  • No mouse or keyboard required

Handling Large Archives on TV

TV hardware isn't as powerful as a phone or PC, so large archive extraction benefits from a few precautions:

Storage awareness: Before extracting a 2 GB archive, ensure the TV has 2 GB+ free space. Check in Settings → Storage. Most Android TV boxes ship with 8-32 GB, so space fills quickly with games and media.

Extract to USB for large files: If the internal storage is nearly full, insert a USB drive and extract directly to it. In AnExplorer, choose the USB drive as the extraction destination when prompted.

Split archives (RAR multi-part): Some ROM collections or media packs split into part01.rar, part02.rar, etc. Place all parts in the same folder. AnExplorer detects multi-part RAR and joins them during extraction — just tap the first part.

Password-protected archives: Some downloaded ZIP/RAR files require a password. AnExplorer prompts for the password before extraction begins. Enter with the on-screen keyboard or a paired Bluetooth keyboard for faster input.

Troubleshooting Archive Issues on TV

ProblemSolution
"Not enough space" errorDelete unused apps/games or extract to USB drive
Extraction seems stuckLarge archives take time on low-end hardware — wait for progress bar to move
RAR file won't openEnsure it's not a partial download — file size should match the source
XAPK install failsEnable "Install Unknown Apps" for AnExplorer in Settings → Security
Archive from NAS extracts slowlyNAS transfer speed limits extraction — use a wired Ethernet connection if possible
Can't navigate with remoteUse D-pad arrows and OK button — touchscreen actions map to D-pad equivalently

Performance by Device

Archive manager works on all Android TV / Google TV / Fire TV devices. Performance varies based on CPU and available RAM:

DeviceExtraction SpeedNotes
Nvidia Shield TV ProFast (Tegra X1+, 3 GB RAM)Handles multi-GB archives easily
Fire TV Cube (3rd gen)Fast (octa-core, 2 GB RAM)Good all-around performance
Google TV StreamerFast (recent hardware)Smooth archive browsing
Fire TV Stick 4K MaxModerateFine for archives under 500 MB
Chromecast with Google TVModerate (limited RAM)Avoid 1 GB+ archives
Fire TV Stick LiteSlowBest for small archives only
Walmart Onn 4K ProGood (3 GB RAM)Handles most archive sizes
Xiaomi Mi Box SModerate2 GB RAM limits large extractions

Tips for Efficient Archive Use on TV

  1. Delete archives after extraction — the original archive file remains after extraction. Delete it to save storage space.
  2. Use 7z over ZIP for creating — 7z compresses 20-40% smaller than ZIP, meaningful when TV storage is limited.
  3. Organize by folder — create a dedicated "Extracted" folder on your USB drive to keep things tidy.
  4. Subtitle packs: After extracting, delete subtitle languages you don't need. Most packs include 10-20 languages but you only need one or two.
  5. Pair a Bluetooth keyboard for entering archive passwords faster than the on-screen keyboard.
