Why Sideload on Android TV?
The TV Play Store (Google Play for TV and Amazon Appstore) shows a limited selection of apps. Many popular Android apps work perfectly on TV but aren't listed in the TV store — either because the developer didn't optimize the listing for TV, or the store's algorithms filter them out.
Popular apps to sideload on Android TV:
- VLC — plays any video format (better codec support than built-in player)
- Kodi — full media center with NAS/IPTV support
- Smart YouTube TV — YouTube without ads, with SponsorBlock
- RetroArch — retro game emulation (NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1, N64)
- Wolf Launcher — custom home screen replacing stock launcher
- Aptoide TV — alternative app store for TV
- Chrome/Firefox — full web browsers for TV
- Steam Link — stream PC games to your TV
AnExplorer makes sideloading simple: transfer the APK to your TV and tap to install. No ADB commands, no PC, no developer knowledge needed.
Getting APKs onto Your TV
Method 1: WiFi Share from phone (easiest)
- Download the APK on your phone (from APKMirror, F-Droid, or developer site)
- Phone: AnExplorer → WiFi Share → select the APK
- TV: AnExplorer → Network → WiFi Receive → accept transfer
- APK arrives on TV → tap to install
Method 2: USB drive
- Copy APK to a USB flash drive on your PC
- Plug drive into TV's USB port
- TV: AnExplorer → USB drive → navigate to APK → install
Works on: Fire TV Cube, Nvidia Shield, Google TV Streamer, Sony Bravia, and any TV with USB-A ports.
Method 3: Browser download (on TV)
- Open TV's browser (Silk on Fire TV, Puffin on others)
- Navigate to APKMirror.com
- Download the APK (select "Android TV" variant if available)
- Open AnExplorer → Downloads → tap APK → install
Method 4: Cloud storage
- Upload APK to Google Drive from your PC
- TV: AnExplorer → Cloud → Google Drive → download APK
- Navigate to downloaded file → install
Split APK Support — Critical for Modern Apps
Modern apps distributed through Google Play use Android App Bundles, which produce split APK packages. APKMirror distributes these as .apks or .xapk files containing multiple APK components.
The problem: The TV's built-in installer can only handle single APK files. It can't process split bundles.
AnExplorer's solution: Tap the .apks, .apkm, or .xapk file → AnExplorer extracts all splits and installs them together. The app installs correctly with all device-specific resources (screen density, CPU architecture, language).
This is one of the most important reasons to use AnExplorer for TV sideloading — without it, you'd need ADB commands on a PC to install split packages.

Troubleshooting TV Sideloading
"App not installed" error
- APK may be phone-only (not compatible with TV's Android version or architecture)
- Download the "Android TV" or "arm64-v8a" variant from APKMirror
- Ensure enough storage space on TV
App installs but doesn't appear in launcher
- Fire TV: check Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications
- Other TVs: hold Home → Apps → see all apps
- Some sideloaded apps appear only in "Unknown Sources" section
App installs but crashes/doesn't work with remote
- The app may not support D-pad/leanback navigation
- It's a phone app that requires touch input
- Try: connect a USB mouse to your TV for touch-dependent apps
"Install unknown apps" option missing
- Device may need Developer Options enabled first (7-tap trick)
- On managed/child TVs, this may be restricted by parental controls
System File Picker Integration
AnExplorer also registers as the system file picker on Android TV. This means sideloaded apps that need to open files (emulators selecting ROMs, media players choosing subtitles) will use AnExplorer to browse and select files. Without AnExplorer, these apps throw "no file picker" errors on Android 11+ TVs.
Security Notes for TV Sideloading
- Only install from trusted sources — APKMirror verifies signatures, F-Droid is open-source only
- Play Protect still scans — Google scans sideloaded APKs on TV just like on phones
- Disable "Install unknown apps" after — if you rarely sideload, turn it off between sessions
- Check app compatibility — download "Android TV" variants when available (leanback UI support)
- Keep sideloaded apps updated manually — they don't auto-update via Play Store
