Sideloading on Fire TV — Why and How
Amazon Fire TV runs Fire OS (based on Android) but only shows apps from the Amazon Appstore. Many popular Android apps work perfectly on Fire TV but aren't listed in Amazon's store — VLC, Kodi, alternative launchers, emulators, and productivity apps.
Sideloading lets you install these apps via APK files. AnExplorer makes this process simple — it's available directly on the Amazon Appstore (no chicken-and-egg problem) and provides multiple ways to get APKs onto your Fire TV.
Step 1: Enable Developer Options
Developer Options must be enabled before you can install unknown apps:
- Go to Settings → My Fire TV → About
- Click on "Fire TV Stick" (or your device name) 7 times
- A message appears: "You are now a developer"
- Go back to My Fire TV — "Developer Options" now appears
On newer Fire OS (2024+): Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options may already be visible without the 7-tap trick.
Step 2: Enable "Install Unknown Apps"
- Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options
- "Install unknown apps" (or "Apps from Unknown Sources")
- Enable for AnExplorer and optionally Silk Browser
Important: Only enable for apps you trust. Don't enable for random apps.
Step 3: Install AnExplorer from Amazon Appstore
AnExplorer is available directly on the Amazon Appstore:
- From Fire TV home → go to Appstore (or Search)
- Search "AnExplorer"
- Install — takes about 30 seconds
- AnExplorer appears in your Apps list
No sideloading needed for AnExplorer itself — it's the tool you'll use to sideload other apps.
Step 4: Get APKs onto Fire TV
Method 1: WiFi transfer from phone (recommended)
The easiest method — no PC, no USB, no browser downloads:
- On your phone: Open AnExplorer → WiFi Share → select the APK file
- On Fire TV: Open AnExplorer → Network → WiFi Receive
- Accept the transfer — APK lands on Fire TV storage
- Navigate to the received file → tap → Install
Speed: 10-30 MB/s depending on your WiFi. A typical APK (50-100 MB) transfers in 3-10 seconds.
Method 2: Download directly on Fire TV
Use Fire TV's built-in Silk browser:
- Open Silk Browser on Fire TV
- Navigate to APKMirror.com (or your trusted APK source)
- Find the app → download the APK
- Open AnExplorer → navigate to Downloads → tap APK → Install
Tip: Navigating websites with a remote is tedious. Use the Fire TV app on your phone as a keyboard for typing URLs.
Method 3: USB drive (Fire TV Cube and Fire TV Edition TVs)
For devices with USB ports:
- Copy APK to a USB flash drive on your PC
- Plug USB drive into Fire TV Cube (USB-A port) or Fire TV Edition TV
- Open AnExplorer → navigate to USB drive → tap APK → Install
Note: Fire TV Stick doesn't have a USB-A port. You'd need a powered USB-C OTG hub (impractical). Use WiFi transfer instead.
Method 4: ADB from PC (advanced)
For power users comfortable with command line:
- Enable ADB debugging: Developer Options → ADB debugging → on
- Find Fire TV IP: Settings → My Fire TV → About → Network
- On PC:
adb connect [fire-tv-ip]:5555 - Install:
adb install app.apk
Fastest for bulk installations but requires a PC and ADB knowledge.

Troubleshooting Fire TV Sideloading
"Install unknown apps" option missing
- Ensure Developer Options is enabled (7-tap trick on About)
- On managed/kids Fire TVs, this may be restricted
- Try: Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options → ADB debugging → on (sometimes unlocks it)
APK installs but app doesn't appear
- Check "Apps" section (not just the home screen)
- Some sideloaded apps appear under Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications
- Or: hold Home button → Apps → see all installed apps
"App not installed" error
- APK may be incompatible with Fire OS version
- Download the Fire TV-specific variant from APKMirror (filter by "Android TV")
- Ensure enough storage (Settings → My Fire TV → About → Storage)
App installs but won't open (crashes)
- The app may not support TV/remote control interface
- Not all phone apps work on Fire TV — look for "Android TV" or "leanback" versions
- Some apps need Google Play Services (not available on Fire TV)
