File Manager for Huawei — Full NAS & Cloud Without Google Play

File Manager for Huawei — Full NAS & Cloud Without Google Play

Huawei Phones — Powerful Hardware, No Google Play

Huawei makes excellent hardware — the Mate 60 Pro, Pura 70 Ultra, and Nova series are competitive with Samsung and Apple in camera quality, build, and performance. But since May 2019, Huawei phones ship without Google Mobile Services (GMS) due to US trade restrictions. No Google Play Store, no Google Maps, no Gmail pre-installed.

This creates a unique challenge for file management. Most Android file managers depend on Google Play for installation and some rely on Google services for cloud features. AnExplorer is different — it works independently of Google Play Services, installs via AppGallery or direct APK, and connects to Google Drive without requiring GMS on the device.

For Huawei users who need NAS access, multi-cloud management, archive tools, and wireless PC transfer, AnExplorer is one of the few full-featured file managers that works reliably without Google.

Installation Without Google Play

  1. Open AppGallery (pre-installed on all Huawei phones)
  2. Search "AnExplorer"
  3. Tap Install — done

This is the simplest method and ensures automatic updates.

Method 2: Direct APK download

If AnExplorer isn't available on AppGallery in your region:

  1. Open the browser on your Huawei phone
  2. Navigate to anexplorer.io/download
  3. Download the APK file
  4. Tap the downloaded file → Install
  5. If blocked: Settings → Security → Install unknown apps → Browser → Allow

Method 3: Transfer APK from another device

If you have another Android phone with Google Play:

  1. Install AnExplorer on the other phone
  2. Use a file sharing app or Bluetooth to send the APK to your Huawei
  3. Open the received APK → Install

Huawei File Manager vs AnExplorer

Huawei ships its own File Manager on EMUI/HarmonyOS. It's more capable than most OEM file managers — it has basic SMB support and Huawei Cloud integration. But it still has significant gaps:

FeatureHuawei File ManagerAnExplorer
Local file browsing
Storage cleanup✅ (Memory Cleaner)
Huawei Cloud❌ (use Huawei's app)
SMB (NAS)✅ (basic)✅ (robust, better auth)
FTP/SFTP✅ Free
WebDAV✅ Free
Google Drive❌ (no GMS)✅ (works without GMS)
Dropbox, OneDrive, MEGA✅ Native
Create ZIP/7z archives
Open RAR/7z/TAR/ISOLimited✅ Full
Wireless PC transfer❌ (Huawei Share = Huawei only)✅ Device Connect (any browser)
APK installer (APKS/APKM)
PDF viewer✅ Built-in

EMUI/HarmonyOS Battery Optimization

Huawei's EMUI and HarmonyOS have the most aggressive battery management of any Android skin. Without proper configuration, background apps are killed within seconds. This is the single most important setup step.

Critical settings (same three-toggle approach as Honor):

  1. Settings → Battery → App launch → find AnExplorer
  2. Toggle OFF "Manage automatically"
  3. Enable ALL three options in the dialog:
    • Auto-launch ✅
    • Secondary launch ✅
    • Run in background ✅
  4. Lock in recent apps: swipe up for recents → swipe down on AnExplorer's card

Additional steps for HarmonyOS 3+:

  • Settings → Battery → More battery settings → disable "Sleep mode when connected to WiFi" (if available)
  • Settings → Apps → App management → AnExplorer → Battery → Unrestricted

Without these settings, Device Connect stops within 5-10 seconds of switching apps. This is the most aggressive battery optimization of any phone brand.

Google Drive Without Google Play Services

One of AnExplorer's unique advantages on Huawei: it connects to Google Drive independently of GMS. This means:

  • Sign in with your Google account directly in AnExplorer
  • Browse, upload, download, move, delete files on Google Drive
  • No need to install Google Play Services or use workarounds
  • Works on all Huawei phones regardless of GMS status

This is essential for Huawei users who still have Google accounts with years of files stored in Drive.

Cloud Storage — 7 Services Without GMS

AnExplorer connects to all major cloud services without requiring Google Play Services:

  • Google Drive — full management without GMS (unique to AnExplorer)
  • Dropbox — personal and team accounts
  • OneDrive — Microsoft personal and business
  • MEGA — 20 GB free, end-to-end encrypted
  • Box — enterprise cloud storage
  • pCloud — European privacy-focused
  • Yandex Disk — popular in CIS regions (large Huawei user base)

For Huawei users in China and CIS regions, Yandex Disk integration is particularly valuable.

Wireless Transfer Without Huawei Share

Huawei Share transfers files between Huawei devices but can't send to a Windows PC, Mac, or Linux machine (unless you install Huawei PC Manager). AnExplorer's Device Connect is universal:

  1. Open AnExplorer → ☰ → Device Connect → Start
  2. Note the address (e.g., http://192.168.1.42:8080)
  3. On any computer: open browser → type address → Enter
  4. Browse, download, upload — works on any OS

No Huawei account. No Huawei PC Manager. No pairing. Works with any device that has a web browser.

Network Storage Access

Huawei's file manager has basic SMB support, but AnExplorer adds FTP, SFTP, and WebDAV:

SMB — NAS and Windows shares:

  1. AnExplorer → Network → SMB → tap +
  2. Enter NAS IP, username, password
  3. Browse shares with more reliable authentication than Huawei's built-in

FTP/SFTP — remote servers:

  1. Network → FTP or SFTP → tap +
  2. Full file management on remote systems

WebDAV — Nextcloud/ownCloud:

  1. Network → WebDAV → tap +
  2. Access self-hosted cloud directly

Compatible Huawei Models

AnExplorer works on all Huawei phones running EMUI 10+ or HarmonyOS:

  • Mate series: Mate 60 Pro, Mate 50 Pro, Mate 40 Pro
  • Pura (formerly P series): Pura 70 Ultra, Pura 70 Pro, P60 Pro, P50 Pro
  • Nova series: Nova 12, Nova 11, Nova 10
  • Enjoy/Y series: budget models with EMUI
  • Older with GMS: Mate 20, P30, P20 (these have Google Play — install normally)

Phones released before May 2019 (Mate 20, P30, and older) have Google Play and can install AnExplorer directly from the Play Store.

Common Tasks for Huawei Users

Sideloading apps without Google Play

Huawei users frequently need to sideload apps not available on AppGallery. AnExplorer makes this easier:

  1. Download APK files from trusted sources (APKMirror, developer websites)
  2. Open AnExplorer → navigate to Downloads → tap the APK
  3. Install — AnExplorer handles split APK bundles (APKS, APKM, XAPK) that the system can't process

This is essential for apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, and banking apps that may not be on AppGallery.

Managing large photo libraries

Huawei's cameras (especially Pura 70 Ultra with its variable aperture) create large RAW files (20-30 MB each) and 4K video. AnExplorer helps manage storage:

  1. Memory Cleaner — find duplicates, leftover files, reclaimable space
  2. NAS backup — connect via SMB and move photos/videos to your home server
  3. Cloud offload — upload to Google Drive, MEGA, or Dropbox to free local space
  4. Archive creation — compress photo folders into ZIP for sharing or backup

Accessing Android/data folder

On HarmonyOS 3+ (Android 12 base), the system restricts access to Android/data/. AnExplorer uses Storage Access Framework to grant access:

  1. Navigate to Android → data
  2. Grant folder access when prompted
  3. Full read/write to app data, game files, WhatsApp backups
