Honor's File Manager — Adequate But Limited
Honor phones run MagicOS — a custom Android skin that Honor developed after splitting from Huawei in 2020. Unlike Huawei phones, Honor devices have full Google Play Services, making app installation straightforward.
MagicOS ships with a built-in File Manager that handles the basics: browsing folders, viewing files by category (images, videos, documents, audio), and running storage cleanup. It integrates with Honor Cloud for backup. But for anything beyond basic local file management, you need a third-party app.
What Honor's file manager can't do:
- Connect to NAS devices or Windows shared folders (no SMB, FTP, or WebDAV)
- Manage Dropbox, OneDrive, MEGA, or Box as file systems
- Create ZIP or 7z archives (can only extract ZIP)
- Transfer files wirelessly to a PC, Mac, or Linux machine (Honor Share = Honor/Huawei devices only)
- Install split APK bundles (APKS, APKM, XAPK)
- Access root file system
AnExplorer provides all of these with a single install from Google Play.

MagicOS Battery Optimization — Critical Configuration
MagicOS inherited Huawei's aggressive battery management (EMUI's power-saving DNA). Without proper configuration, MagicOS kills background apps aggressively — including AnExplorer's Device Connect server.
The key setting (different from other Android skins):
- Settings → Battery → App launch → find AnExplorer
- Toggle OFF "Manage automatically" — this is the critical step
- A dialog appears with three options — enable ALL three:
- Auto-launch ✅
- Secondary launch ✅
- Run in background ✅
- Lock in recent apps: open recent apps → swipe down on AnExplorer's card
This three-toggle approach is unique to MagicOS/EMUI-derived systems. On most other Android skins, you just disable battery optimization. On Honor, you must explicitly enable each background permission.
Additional step for MagicOS 8+:
- Settings → Apps → App management → AnExplorer → Battery → Unrestricted
Without these settings, Device Connect stops within 10–20 seconds of switching apps.
Wireless Transfer Without Honor Share
Honor Share (formerly Huawei Share) transfers files between Honor and Huawei devices using WiFi Direct. It's fast for phone-to-phone but can't send files to a Windows PC, Mac, or Linux machine.
AnExplorer's Device Connect provides universal transfer:
- Open AnExplorer → ☰ → Device Connect → Start
- Note the address (e.g.,
http://192.168.1.42:8080) - On any computer: open a browser → type the address → Enter
- Browse phone files, download, upload from PC
No Honor account. No pairing. No software on the PC. Works on any device with a web browser.
Honor Magic8 Pro and Magic V5 support WiFi 6E, delivering transfer speeds of 60–80 MB/s on compatible routers.
Network Storage Access
Honor's file manager has zero network capability. AnExplorer provides full access:
SMB — NAS and Windows shares:
- AnExplorer → Network → SMB → tap +
- Enter NAS IP (e.g.,
192.168.1.100), username, password - Browse shares, stream media, manage backups
FTP/SFTP — remote servers:
- Network → FTP or SFTP → tap +
- Enter hostname, port, credentials
- Full file management on remote systems
WebDAV — Nextcloud/ownCloud:
- Network → WebDAV → tap +
- Enter your self-hosted cloud URL
- Access private cloud directly
All connections save to the sidebar for one-tap access.
Cloud Storage Management
Beyond Honor Cloud (which handles device backup), AnExplorer connects to 7 major cloud services:
- Google Drive — full browse, upload, download, move, delete
- Dropbox — personal and team folders
- OneDrive — Microsoft personal and business
- MEGA — 20 GB free, end-to-end encrypted
- Box — enterprise cloud storage
- pCloud — European privacy-focused
- Yandex Disk — popular in CIS regions
Copy between services, or between cloud and local storage, without intermediate downloads.
Honor-Specific Notes
Honor vs Huawei — the key difference
Honor split from Huawei in November 2020. The practical difference for app installation:
- Honor phones (2021+): Full Google Play Store access. Install AnExplorer directly from Play Store.
- Huawei phones: No Google Play. Must use AppGallery or sideload APK.
If you have an older Honor phone (before the split) that still has Google Play, AnExplorer works normally.
Foldable support (Magic V series)
Honor Magic V5, V3, and Vs are book-style foldables. AnExplorer adapts to both screens:
- Cover display: Quick file operations, checking downloads
- Unfolded main display: Full split-pane layout for desktop-class file management
- Flex mode: When partially folded, the interface adjusts to the visible area
Installing APKs on MagicOS
MagicOS requires explicit permission for sideloading:
- Settings → Security → More settings → Install unknown apps → AnExplorer → Allow
- Navigate to APK in AnExplorer → tap to install
- MagicOS may show a security scan — wait, then tap Install
AnExplorer handles split APK bundles (APKS, APKM, XAPK) that Honor's built-in installer can't process.
Compatible Honor Models
AnExplorer works on every Honor phone with Google Play (2021+):
- Magic (flagship): Magic8 Pro, Magic7 Pro, Magic6 Pro, Magic5 Pro
- Magic V (foldable): Magic V5, Magic V3, Magic Vs3, Magic Vs2
- Number series: Honor 600 Pro, 600, 400 Pro, 400, 300 Pro
- X series (mid-range): X9d, X8d, X7d, X9c, X8c
- N series: N300, N200
All models running MagicOS 6.0+ are fully compatible.
Common Tasks for Honor Users
Freeing storage on mid-range phones
Honor X and number series phones (64–256 GB) fill up with photos, WhatsApp media, and app data:
- Memory Cleaner: AnExplorer → ☰ → Memory Cleaner — scans for duplicates, leftover APKs, empty folders. Typically recovers 2–5 GB.
- WhatsApp cleanup: Navigate to
Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/→ delete old videos (usually the largest category, 5–15 GB on active users). - Cloud offload: Connect Google Drive or MEGA → move old photos/videos to cloud storage.
- NAS backup: If you have a home NAS, connect via SMB and move large media libraries off the phone.
Accessing Android/data on MagicOS 8+
MagicOS 8 (Android 14) restricts access to Android/data/ and Android/obb/. AnExplorer uses Storage Access Framework:
- Navigate to Internal Storage → Android → data
- System dialog: "Allow AnExplorer to access this folder?"
- Tap "Use this folder" → Allow
- Full access to app data, game files, and WhatsApp databases
Using Honor MagicBook with Device Connect
Honor MagicBook laptops can access your phone's files via Device Connect:
- Start Device Connect on your Honor phone
- On your MagicBook: open the browser → type the displayed address
- Browse, download, upload — no Honor Share pairing needed, works instantly
This is faster than Honor Share for large file transfers and doesn't require both devices to be Honor products.
