Files by Google vs AnExplorer — The Default vs The Power Tool

Files by Google comes pre-installed on Pixel phones and many other Android devices. It's clean, simple, and handles basic file management well. For many users, it's enough.

But "enough" has limits. The moment you need to access a NAS, connect to cloud storage beyond Google Drive, manage files on your Android TV, or transfer files to a PC without a cable — Files by Google can't help. That's where AnExplorer picks up.

This isn't about which is "better" in absolute terms. It's about which fits your needs.

When Files by Google Is the Right Choice

Files by Google wins in specific scenarios where simplicity matters more than power:

Basic local file management. If you only ever browse photos, move downloads, and delete old files — Files by Google's categorized view (Images, Videos, Documents, Audio) is clean, fast, and requires zero configuration. It's the "just works" option for people who don't think about file management.

Storage cleanup without thinking. The "Clean" tab is genuinely useful — it surfaces junk files, old screenshots, large downloads, and duplicate photos automatically. You tap "Clean" and get space back. AnExplorer's Memory Cleaner does similar work but requires you to navigate to it.

Quick Share integration. If you frequently share files with nearby Android devices or Windows PCs using Google's Quick Share, Files by Google has the deepest integration — it's built into the share sheet natively.

PIN-protected Safe Folder. For hiding sensitive files behind a PIN, Files by Google's Safe Folder is simple and built-in. AnExplorer uses hidden files (dot-prefix) which is less user-friendly for non-technical users.

Zero ads, zero cost. Files by Google is completely free with no ads, no Pro tier, no upsells. It's funded by Google as part of the Android ecosystem. AnExplorer's free version has minimal ads; the Pro upgrade ($29.99 lifetime) removes them.

When AnExplorer Is the Right Choice

AnExplorer wins the moment your needs go beyond basic local file browsing:

You have a NAS or home server. Synology, QNAP, WD My Cloud, TrueNAS, Unraid — AnExplorer connects via SMB, FTP, or SFTP. Browse your NAS files from your phone, TV, or tablet as easily as local storage. Files by Google has zero network capability.

You use multiple cloud services. Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, MEGA, Box, Yandex Disk, pCloud — all accessible from one app. Files by Google doesn't integrate with any cloud service (not even Google Drive — that's a separate app).

You manage files on Android TV. AnExplorer has a native TV interface with D-pad navigation, designed for remote control use. Files by Google doesn't exist on Android TV at all. If you sideload apps, manage media, or access NAS content on your TV, AnExplorer is the only option.

You transfer files to PC wirelessly. Device Connect turns your phone into a web server — open the address in any PC browser and transfer files. No app needed on the PC, no account, no driver. Files by Google requires installing Quick Share on the PC and signing into a Google account.

You work with archives beyond ZIP. RAR, RAR5, 7z, TAR, TAR.GZ, ISO, CBR, CBZ — AnExplorer opens them all. It also creates ZIP and 7z archives. Files by Google can only open basic ZIP files.

You sideload apps. APKS, APKM, XAPK bundle formats — AnExplorer handles multi-part APK installation that Files by Google can't do. Essential for sideloading on TV, VR, and devices without Play Store access.

You have a Wear OS watch. AnExplorer is one of the only file managers with a dedicated Wear OS app. Transfer music to your watch, browse watch storage, manage downloaded files — all from your wrist.

The Cross-Device Advantage

The biggest gap between Files by Google and AnExplorer isn't any single feature — it's device coverage. Files by Google exists only on phones and tablets. If you own any other Android device, you're on your own.

AnExplorer runs on every Android form factor with optimized interfaces for each:

  • Phones and tablets — same as Files by Google, plus all the power features above
  • Android TV, Fire TV, Google TV — native remote-control interface with D-pad navigation, large text, and leanback-friendly layouts. Browse USB drives, access NAS content, sideload APKs — all from your couch.
  • Wear OS watches — dedicated watch app for browsing watch storage, receiving files via Wi-Fi Share, and managing downloaded music for offline playback
  • VR headsets (Meta Quest, Pico, HTC Vive) — sideloadable; manage media files, transfer 360° videos from phone, install APKs
  • Android Automotive — in-car file management where the manufacturer allows third-party apps
  • Chromebook — available via Play Store; adds NAS access and cloud integration that ChromeOS's built-in Files app lacks
  • AR glasses — where the device runs standalone Android

This matters because files don't stay on one device. You take photos on your phone, watch them on your TV, listen to music on your watch, and back everything up to your NAS. AnExplorer is the single app that handles all of these transfers and access patterns. Files by Google handles none of them beyond the phone.

Can You Use Both?

Yes — and many users do. A common setup:

  • Files by Google for quick cleanup (the "Clean" tab is genuinely useful) and Quick Share
  • AnExplorer for everything else: NAS access, cloud management, TV file browsing, wireless PC transfers, archive handling

They don't conflict. Both can be installed simultaneously.

Switching from Files by Google

There's nothing to "migrate" — AnExplorer accesses the same filesystem. Install AnExplorer, and all your files are immediately accessible. Your folder structure, downloads, photos, and documents are all in the same places.

The only setup needed is connecting your cloud accounts and network shares (one-time, takes 2 minutes per service).
