Nothing Phone Deserves More Than Google Files
Nothing Phone runs Nothing OS — a near-stock Android experience with a distinctive visual layer (Glyph interface, monochrome design language, dot-matrix widgets). Under the hood, it's clean Android with minimal bloat. That's great for performance and updates, but it means the file manager is just Google Files — the same basic app that ships on Pixel phones.
Google Files handles the basics: browsing folders, viewing categories (images, videos, documents), cleaning storage. But Nothing Phone buyers tend to be tech-savvy users who chose the phone for its design philosophy and clean software. These users often need more from their file manager:
- Network storage access — connect to a NAS, home server, or PC shared folders over SMB, FTP, or WebDAV
- Cloud management — browse and manage Dropbox, OneDrive, MEGA, and other services as file systems (not just Google Drive)
- Archive handling — create ZIP/7z archives, open RAR, TAR, ISO, and comic book formats
- Wireless PC transfer — send files to any computer without cables or proprietary software
- APK management — install split APK bundles, back up apps
AnExplorer provides all of this while matching Nothing's clean aesthetic — no ads in the free tier's core experience, minimal UI, fast operation.

Setup on Nothing OS
Nothing OS is close to stock Android, which makes setup straightforward — no aggressive battery optimization to fight, no manufacturer-specific permission layers.
Making AnExplorer the default
- Settings → Apps → Default apps → File Manager
- Select AnExplorer
- Done — all file-open intents now route to AnExplorer
Storage permissions
On first launch, AnExplorer requests "All files access." Grant it for full management of internal storage. If you missed the prompt:
- Settings → Apps → AnExplorer → Permissions → Files and media → Allow management of all files
Battery optimization
Nothing OS is less aggressive than Xiaomi's MIUI or Vivo's Funtouch OS about killing background apps. Device Connect usually works without changes. But if you notice it stopping when you switch apps:
- Settings → Battery → Battery optimization → All apps → AnExplorer → Don't optimize
This is a one-time setting that ensures the wireless transfer server stays active.
Wireless Transfer from Nothing Phone to PC
Nothing doesn't include any proprietary PC transfer software. Quick Share (built into Nothing OS) only works between Android and Chrome devices. For PC transfer, you're left with USB cables — unless you use AnExplorer.
Device Connect turns your Nothing Phone into a web server:
- Open AnExplorer → ☰ → Device Connect → Start
- The app displays an address like
http://192.168.1.42:8080 - On your PC: open any browser → type the address → Enter
- Browse your phone's files, download what you need, upload from PC
Nothing Phone (2) and Phone (2a) support WiFi 6, so transfer speeds reach 40–70 MB/s on a compatible router. No drivers, no pairing, no accounts.
Network Storage
Google Files has zero network capability. AnExplorer connects to everything:
SMB — NAS and Windows shares: If you have a Synology, QNAP, TrueNAS, or Windows PC with shared folders:
- AnExplorer → Network → SMB → tap +
- Enter server IP (e.g.,
192.168.1.100), username, password - Browse shares, stream media, manage files over your local network
FTP/SFTP — remote servers:
- Network → FTP (port 21) or SFTP (port 22) → tap +
- Enter hostname and credentials
- Full file management on remote systems
WebDAV — self-hosted cloud:
- Network → WebDAV → tap +
- Enter your Nextcloud/ownCloud URL and login
- Access your private cloud directly
All connections save to the sidebar for instant access.
Cloud Storage
Google Files shows Drive files in search but can't manage other cloud services. AnExplorer provides full management for 7 services:
- Google Drive — browse, upload, download, move, rename, delete
- Dropbox — personal and team folders
- OneDrive — Microsoft personal and business
- MEGA — 20 GB free, end-to-end encrypted
- Box — enterprise storage
- pCloud — European privacy-focused
- Yandex Disk — CIS regions
Copy files between services or between cloud and local storage without intermediate downloads.
Nothing Phone-Specific Notes
Glyph notifications during transfer
Nothing Phone's Glyph interface (rear LED strips) can be configured to show progress indicators. While AnExplorer doesn't directly control the Glyph, notification-based progress bars during file operations will trigger Glyph patterns if you've enabled notification-linked Glyphs in Nothing OS settings.
Bootloader unlocking and root
Nothing allows bootloader unlocking on all Phone models (though it voids warranty). If you've rooted with Magisk:
- AnExplorer Pro grants access to
/system/,/data/data/, and other protected paths - Browse and edit system files, manage Magisk modules
- Google Files has no root capability
CMF Phone compatibility
CMF Phone 1 and CMF Phone 2 (Nothing's budget sub-brand) run Nothing OS with the same software stack. AnExplorer works identically on CMF devices — same setup, same features, same performance.
Compatible Nothing Models
- Nothing Phone (2a) Plus — latest mid-range, Nothing OS 3+
- Nothing Phone (2a) — mid-range, Nothing OS 2.5+
- Nothing Phone (2) — flagship, Nothing OS 2+

Common Tasks for Nothing Phone Users
Managing storage without expandable memory
No Nothing Phone model has a microSD card slot. When 128 or 256 GB fills up, AnExplorer provides multiple solutions:
- Memory Cleaner — scans for duplicate photos, leftover APKs, empty folders, and large forgotten downloads. Typically recovers 2–5 GB.
- Cloud offload — connect Google Drive, MEGA (20 GB free), or Dropbox and move old photos/videos to cloud storage directly from AnExplorer.
- NAS backup — if you have a home NAS, connect via SMB and move large media libraries off the phone entirely.
- PC transfer — use Device Connect to quickly move files to your computer for archival.
Organizing downloads and screenshots
Nothing OS dumps all downloads into a single folder and screenshots into DCIM/Screenshots. AnExplorer makes organization easier:
- Create custom folder structures (e.g., Downloads/Work, Downloads/Personal)
- Batch-rename files with meaningful names
- Move screenshots to categorized folders
- Sort any folder by date, size, or type to find what you need
Archive management for developers
Many Nothing Phone users are developers or tech enthusiasts who work with compressed files regularly. AnExplorer handles:
- Create: ZIP and 7z archives from any selection of files/folders
- Extract: ZIP, RAR, RAR5, 7z, TAR, TAR.GZ, ISO, CBR, CBZ
- Browse: peek inside archives without extracting (view file list, extract individual files)
