Why Set a Default File Manager?

When you set AnExplorer as your default file manager:

• Tapping "Browse files" or "File manager" in system shortcuts opens AnExplorer
• Some apps that need a file browser use the system default
• File-related system intents route through AnExplorer
• The "Files" shortcut in your app drawer or settings links to AnExplorer

Method 1: Through Default Apps Settings

Stock Android / Pixel:

1. Settings → Apps → Default apps → File manager → select AnExplorer

Samsung (One UI):

1. Settings → Apps → Choose default apps → File manager → select AnExplorer
2. Or: Settings → Apps → menu (⋮) → Default apps → File manager

Xiaomi (MIUI):

1. Settings → Apps → Manage apps → menu (⋮) → Default apps → File manager
2. Note: MIUI may not show all file managers as options

OnePlus (OxygenOS):

1. Settings → Apps & notifications → Default apps → File manager

Huawei (EMUI):

1. Settings → Apps → Default apps → File manager

Method 2: Through App Info

1. Find AnExplorer in your app drawer
2. Long-press the icon → App info (or the ⓘ icon)
3. Look for "Set as default" or "Open by default"
4. Enable relevant default settings

Method 3: Through Intent (First Use)

1. When any app triggers a "choose a file manager" dialog, select AnExplorer
2. Tap "Always" (not "Just once") to set it as permanent default
3. Future file browsing requests go to AnExplorer automatically

How "Open With" Works on Android

When you open a file, Android checks which apps can handle that file type and either:

• Opens it directly in the default app (if one is set)
• Shows an "Open with" dialog letting you choose (if no default is set)
• Shows a bottom sheet with app suggestions

Setting File Type Defaults

In AnExplorer, when you tap a file:

1. If no default is set → Android shows "Open with" dialog
2. Choose your preferred app
3. Select "Always" to make it the permanent default for that file type
4. Future taps on that file type open the chosen app directly

Clearing a Default App Association

If you accidentally set the wrong app as default:

1. Go to Settings → Apps
2. Find the app that currently opens the file type
3. Tap it → Open by default (or "Set as default")
4. Tap Clear defaults
5. Next time you open that file type, the "Open with" dialog appears again

AnExplorer as File Picker in Other Apps

How Apps Pick Files

Apps use several mechanisms to let you select files:

1. System Document Picker (SAF)

• Used by: Most modern apps (email attachments, messaging apps, upload forms)
• Appearance: System-provided UI with "Browse" option
• AnExplorer integration: Limited — this is Android's own picker, third-party file managers cannot fully replace it
• However: Some SAF pickers show a "Browse" option that opens your default file manager

2. Intent-Based File Selection

• Used by: Older apps, some messaging apps
• Appearance: "Choose a file manager" dialog
• AnExplorer integration: Full — AnExplorer appears as an option if set as default

3. Custom In-App Browsers

• Used by: Some apps with their own file browsing UI
• AnExplorer integration: None — the app uses its own built-in browser

Making AnExplorer Appear in File Pickers

To maximize AnExplorer's presence when other apps request files:

1. Set it as default file manager (described above)
2. When SAF picker appears, look for "Browse" or hamburger menu → AnExplorer may appear as a location option
3. If the picker shows a navigation drawer, AnExplorer might appear alongside "Downloads," "Drive," "Photos"

Sharing Files FROM AnExplorer TO Other Apps

The reverse workflow — sending files from AnExplorer to other apps:

1. Navigate to the file in AnExplorer
2. Long-press → Share
3. The standard Android share sheet appears with all your apps
4. Select the destination app (email, messaging, social media, etc.)
5. The file is shared to that app

This works for:

• Attaching files to emails
• Sharing media in messaging apps
• Uploading to social media
• Opening files in specific editors
• Sending to printer apps

Opening Files with Specific Apps

"Open with" from AnExplorer

When you tap a file in AnExplorer and multiple apps can handle it:

1. Tap the file
2. If a default is set, it opens in that app immediately
3. If no default exists, a chooser dialog appears
4. Select your preferred app
5. Choose "Always" for permanent or "Just once" for one-time

Forcing "Open with" When Default is Set

If you have a default set but want to open in a different app this one time:

1. Long-press the file in AnExplorer
2. Look for "Open with" or "Open as" in the context menu
3. This shows all compatible apps regardless of your default setting
4. Select the alternative app — this does not change your default

Opening Files as Different Types

Sometimes you want to open a file as a different type than its extension suggests:

• Open a .txt file as a .json viewer
• Open a .log file in a code editor
• Open an unknown file type as text

In AnExplorer:

1. Long-press the file
2. "Open as" → select type (Text, Image, Video, Audio, etc.)
3. Choose the app from the filtered list

Handling Downloads from Browsers

When you download a file from a browser:

1. The file saves to your Downloads folder
2. Tapping the download notification opens the file
3. The default app for that file type handles it

If you want AnExplorer to open the Downloads folder instead of the specific file:

1. Go to your browser settings → Downloads → change "Open with" behavior
2. Some browsers let you set the download action to "Open folder" instead of "Open file"
3. Alternatively, navigate to Downloads in AnExplorer manually

Troubleshooting

AnExplorer doesn't appear in Default Apps → File Manager list

• Your Android version or manufacturer may not expose this setting
• Try searching Settings for "default file" or "default apps"
• On some devices, you cannot change the default file manager through settings — it always uses the built-in Files app for system requests
• AnExplorer still works for direct file browsing; it just cannot intercept all system file requests

"Open with" dialog stopped appearing (always opens in wrong app)

1. Settings → Apps → find the app that incorrectly opens the files
2. Open by default → Clear defaults
3. The next time you open that file type, the chooser returns

Some apps ignore my default file manager

• Apps using SAF (Storage Access Framework) directly invoke Android's system picker — this cannot be changed to a third-party file manager
• This is a limitation of Android's architecture, not AnExplorer
• The SAF picker may include AnExplorer as a "source" in its side drawer, but the picker UI itself is always Android's system UI

File opens but in the wrong format

If opening a file shows garbage text or an error:

• The file extension may not match its actual content
• Use "Open as" in AnExplorer to specify the correct type
• Rename the file with the correct extension if you know what it actually is
• Use AnExplorer's file properties to check MIME type detection
